STEWARDS OF PUBLIC LANDS

ELECTRONIC NEWSLETTER FOR OCT. 16 2006

GARDENSCAPES DONATES GRABBERS AND SAFETY GLASSES TO STEWARDS

Rain or shine, the Stewards of Public Lands' enthusiasm and determination are unflappable. Despite Saturday's rain, the Stewards filled a roll-off dumpster at the Black Canyon Wash Highway 260 shooting area. Before the cleanup began, Colleen and Steve Harbison of Gardenscapes donated more than a dozen sets of grabbers and two dozen pairs of safety glasses to the Stewards.

Volunteers were, from left clockwise, Judy Miller, Dave Miller, Pat Haynie, Tom Bagley, Diane Joens, Steve Morehouse, Dex Allen, Troy Christensen, Colleen Harbison, Steve Harbison, Charles Mackey, Warren Den Dekker and Debbie LaFrance. Other volunteers included Sharon Morehouse, Bob Formhals, Zach Wolfe and Bob and Virginia Driscoll. Walter Thomas with the Yavapai County Community Services crew and the Coconino National Forest also assisted.

Christensen, Access Program Coordinator for the Arizona Game and Fish Department, arranged for the dumpster and drove from Phoenix to help the Stewards. Mackey coordinated marking the location for the dumpster. The Stewards are not just about cleanup projects. Their efforts are a long-term commitment. The Stewards are committed to maintaining public lands clean of illegally dumped trash and litter so valuable land resources may be safely enjoyed by all. Stewards encourage community members who use the local shooting areas to "pack it in, and pack it out." They have scheduled a cleanup in the Rimrock and Lake Montezuma areas Nov. 18.

Save this Date: Stewards of Public Lands Plan Rimrock- Lake Montezuma Cleanup Nov. 18. Check for Web site updates on this project: www.verdeconnections.comThis is tentative project discussion. We are looking at a project 1.2 miles past the Montezuma Well turn-off on Forest Service road # 119. This area is in real need of a cleanup with mattresses, a refrigerator, some tires, and one engine block along with lots of tree limb cuttings, and the usual trash. Some side roads with all types of debris. Stewards will notify everyone when a firmed up project location is determined. Jim and Lynn Sweitzer and Dex Allen have done preliminary scoping. SRP and Yavapai County may assist with this project, as well as the Coconino National Forest. Stewards will have a planning meeting, date, time and location to be announced.

It is excellent that the Arizona Republic is highlighting this serious state-wide issue with a series of educational articles. Many thanks to our local Verde Valley media who have supported the Stewards for the past three years, The Verde Independent/Camp Verde Bugle, Camp Verde Journal and Cottonwood Journal Extra, and Yavapai Broadcasting. They’re definitely very special Stewards’ partners.
