Fred Rees gets his wish for an iced bucket of cool, clear bottled water.

When you've never missed a Stewards cleanup yet, you deserve special treatment!

Verde District Ranger Tom Bonomo gives a safety talk before the cleanup starts. Clarkdale Police Sgt. Mike Pierce observes.

The Stewards volunteers always receive a safety talk before beginning cleanups.

Chalres Mackey and Roy Buck watch while Clarkdale Police Chief Pat Haynie looks at illegal dumping identification.

Vehicle identification number found. A visit to the illegal dumper from local law enforcement is imminent.

Cottonwood resident and Stewards volunteer Roy Buck usually has a day's work done before the cleanup begins.

Roy's personal mission for many years has been to clean up streets, ditches and washes in the City of Cottonwood.

Joan Tyler and Virgil Packard fill a bag with trash.

Joan and Virgil working hard!

City of Cottonwood backhoe operator Jim Wixom.

Debra LaFrance worked with Safeway to provide snacks and water. Debra made sure we had all the comforts of home, including a nice table and tablecloth

This is the "before" picture of trashed dumped into a deep tributary wash. This wash joins the Black Canyon Wash, a tributary to the Verde River.

Someone had discarded a dead dog in the wash, and the volunteers had to deal with the stench.

A nasty, smelly pile of junk. Clarkdale's Police Sgt. Mike Pierce operated the backhoe while Chief Pat Haynie and volunteer Jess Tyler assisted.

Cleaning up the wash.

It's a big job!

Chief Haynie loads junk into the backhoe's front loader.

Jess Tyler and Chief Haynie load illegally dumped computer equipment into the bucket.

Nobody said it would be easy!

Oh! If only people wouldn't dump their trash on public lands! We could spend our Saturdays lounging around.....

Jess, Chief Haynie and Sgt. Pierce are quite the team!

We've almost got it! Hang in there guys!

Only a couple more computers to pick up.

Illegal dumping can impair aquifers and drinking water.

One corner of the wash is done, now for the rest.

Up out of the ditch and moving toward the roll off dumpster...

Here we go!

OK. Now for the other side of the wash.

Volunteers are ALWAYS grateful to see loaders and dump trucks arrive. It makes the job much easier.

Bill Warnken and Tom Bonomo haul a load of trash to the dumpster.

Thank you Town of Clarkdale and Chief Haynie for helping the Stewards with the Mingus Avenue/Allen Springs and Ogden Ranch/Old 279 cleanups.

Getting ready to load a cornucopia of tangled discarded bed springs.

Discarded mattresses and springs filled a dumpster.

Bill Warnken's SUV came in handy!

Dr. Wendell Swank is a faithful Steward.

The always energetic Roy Buck.

Fred and Jim wrestle with something BIG!

Fred Rees starts to unload a large discarded hot tub shell shot full of holes.

Fred and Jim say, "OK, we thnk we have it balanced now."

Going...

Going...

Gone!

More illegally dumped debris.

Joan Tyler and Ron Bueckert deal with the acres and acres of broken glass.

Ron Bueckert picks up more glass and discarded shot gun shells.

Prescott National Forest volunteer Albert Sillas

And last but not least, here's happy Bob from Scottsdale. When he called to visit Jess, Jess said, "Bring your gloves." Now Bob knows why!
